Introduction to Indian Education system
After approximately 3 hours of sleep (I was a little more wired than I realized), I joined other participants to learn about the unique history and composition of India.
Maya Menon shared insights into Indian history and the cultural and social leanings that influence the current make-up of India’s socio-cultural, and educational landscape. She shared information about the political map of India, some notable Indians. Some interesting facts about India include:
India is the 7th largest country in the world with a population of 1.42 billion.
India is made up of 28 states and 8 Union territories (While states are autonomous governments , Union territories are governed by the Central Government).
There are 22 different languages spoken in India, although there are various reports that indicate a total linguistic count that is closer to 500.
The literacy rate in India is 77.7% (84% for men and 70.3 for women). Historically, women in the South of India have a higher literacy rate than women in the North of India.
Sarthak Malhotra shared some insightful information regarding the history of Delhi and the meaning of the name. Did you know that the city we know today as New Delhi, has had 7 other cities that preceded it? These cities were a result of conquests and shifting power and religious dynamics over hundreds of years. Below are the 7 cities:
